Immortal_2010_04_02 (Los Angeles, CA – The Avalon)

When it comes to seeing concerts, there are two experiences. There’s your average, everyday ‘fun’ concert, then there are the EPIC soul-shaking ones. It seems the epic events usually happen when I’m forced to travel to LA because there isn’t an Arizona stop on the tour. Immortal only played New York and Los Angeles, so the drive was unavoidable. I felt sorry for people even farther away from the coasts who couldn’t drive to one of the shows, but it made the concert feel even more special knowing only die-hard fans and a few locals were there.

It was an early show, which I was mad about at first since I had to rush around a little to get there and ‘get settled’. I ended up preferring the early show when we got out around 10:30 and had plenty of time to hop back on the metro and have a full night of boozy fun downtown. It was my first time going to The Avalon, and was pleasantly surprised by the stage set up, balcony, sound and lighting. A great place to see a band, just falling in second place to the Fonda. The recording turned out slightly boomy with the low end being a little undefined for my tastes, but that probably had more to do with placement than venue sound.

The band came on promptly at 8:45 and played over an hour and a half to a completely psyched crowd. There is a lot of footage from the show floating around due to the venue (and band’s?) relaxed stance on still and video cameras. I wasn’t ready to ask about audio though 🙂 Seeing Apollyon with the band was also a highlight as Aura Noir has been a long-time favorite of mine.

The rest of the trip included a massive pillow fight, scotch, Amoeba, relaxing poolside on a tall building, yelling Bon Jovi lyrics, 4 pounds of carne asada, a frisking for weapons, late night discussions of photography and artistic integrity, and the sound of a portal to hell opening in the desert on the drive back to AZ (which happened around the time of an earthquake!).
