I had never heard of Merrimack until I read who was supporting Marduk on their tour. The day before the show I checked out some songs on their MySpace and was shocked at how good they are! I had to think of Deathspell Omega because of the…well..French connection.

I’ve been waiting to see Nachtmystium play live since I heard Instinct:Decay and Assassins. I wasn’t sure if the more progressive parts of Assassins would translate live, but was happy to see/hear they could easily do it (well, no Seasick pt2 w/saxophone but still…). Check out their Wikipedia entry for more info. Their sound is tough to explain since some songs are ‘pure’ black metal, some thrash, some punk influences, and some with progressive/psychedelic touches thrown in with the mix. Aura Noir tripping, playing Darkthrone songs?

It’s been a long wait to see Marduk in AZ. The last time was in early 2001! The same pattern as Mayhem, strange. Especially considering Marduk was supposed to be on the Blackenedfest tour with Mayhem. This show more than made up for them not making the ‘all-star’ tour. The opening bands were amazing too! I’ll be posting those recordings soon.

Marduk used to be considered the Motorhead (or AC/DC if you prefer) of black metal. They had a sound that was instantly recognizable, and every album sounded pretty much the same. That was more or less true until the band had a renaissance when every member, except for founding member Morgan Håkansson, was replaced by 2006. Their sound was still recognizable as being Marduk, but there was added atmosphere, some slower sections, some experimentation! The success of this is evident on the album ROM 5:12, and the newest album Wormwood.

If you already missed the tour, you should be ashamed of yourself. At least you will have this recording to motivate you to see them the next time(?) they’re in town. If it hasn’t reached your town yet, by all means do yourself the favor of seeing an amazing live Marduk show.

The Unfortunates_2008_04_12 (Mesa, AZ – The Hollywood Alley)

•November 5, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Here’s a recording of a great local band that I just never got around to posting. The Unfortunates played this show with Kill Baby Kill and The Dead Eyes Of London. I was reminded of this recording when I heard the news of Vince’s death (lead vocals/guitar). I only got to see them play twice before they broke up, so I’m glad I made this recording. It’s a good way to remember the band, and more importantly Vince Bocchini.

Immortal “All Shall Fall” Limited Mailorder Edition

•October 16, 2009 • Leave a Comment

There are some bands who are worth spending some ‘extra’ money on. Immortal is definitely one of them. After a 7 year hiatus their new album “All Shall Fall” is now out worldwide. Their record label, Nuclear Blast, has released a very limited edition through their mailorder in Germany. The packaging is close to matching how awesome the music is, which is not an easy thing to do! It comes with the digipac CD, button, poster flag, patch, certificate of authenticity, and the album on four 7″ picture disc records, all housed in a very heavy metal box. The box has the cover artwork in relief. Take a look:

l_45f05547e1654f12adb1136a92185d2fMy mind is still blown by how awesome this concert was. I will definitely be at one (or more) of their shows on the next tour. The Entrance Band may make you believe there’s good music left to be made. Listen to the sample, and then get after it! Don’t forget to buy their new album too!

Great opening band for the Datarock show! If you like your rock with electronic touches and plenty of danceability, UK style, then Esser is your band. I know that description can mean horrible music, but these guys are definitely worth checking out. I’d really like to see these guys do a headlining set, and from what I saw the other night I’m guessing they will be on their way to bigger things in the US. Here’s an older story with some background info.

Datarock I have to say I’ve never seen anything like Datarock before! I’m not a fan of a lot of dance music, but Datarock are more of an electro-dance-pop-rock hybrid, with a good sense of humor. Live guitars, drums, saxaphone, keyboards, electronic drums/effects, and a lot of dancing made them extremely entertaining to watch. In their words they sound like “The trinity of Talking Heads, DEVO and Happy Mondays!”

DATH-posterI hadn’t heard a proper set from Dear and the Headlights until this show and I have to admit I was impressed. Why else would I post the recording? It’s definitely not my usual fare, but the Cure-ish vocals and 100% solid song writing make this band something to listen to. This was also the final appearance of Chuckie Duff playing with the band.

My last DATH show…
Current mood:  nostalgic
Hi DATH friends,

It’s kind of hard to express how important all the boys in DATH have been in my life over the last 4 years. So, I am not going to even try. I did, however, want to say thanks to all of you who continue to make DATH possible by listening to the tunes and sharing them with others. It’s bittersweet leaving the band, because I know they are going to continue to kill it without me. I’m excited, along with the rest of you, to pick up the next record and give it a spin, whenever that may be.

It would mean a lot to me to see all you local folks at the show on Wednesday. I promise to stay just sober enough to put on a great show. Oh, and we’re playing with 3 new bands that we’ve never shared a bill with before: Austin Gibbs, The Diadem and Kissing Cousins. All great bands, so even more reasons to make it out.

Much Love!
Chuckie
